Ah, Instagram. We either love it or we hate it. With constantly changing algorithms and features it can be so difficult to keep up with best practices. One thing about Bookstagram is that it’s one of the most wholesome, welcoming communities on the internet. I’ve never felt so included until I joined the Bookstagram space.

But, even though it is the most wholesome and welcoming space, you still want to be seen on it. Despite the change in features and algorithms, one of the best and most reliable ways to be found on Bookstagram is through hashtags.

What are Instagram Hashtags?

Hashtags on Instagram are like the magical keys that unlock the doors to your content’s visibility and reach. These nifty little tags are essentially keywords or phrases preceded by the pound sign (#), which categorise and organise your posts into specific topics or themes. When you add hashtags to your captions or comments, you’re essentially telling Instagram, “Hey, my post belongs to this cool club of content!”

Imagine you’re sharing a stunning photo of your latest read on Bookstagram. By including relevant hashtags like #BookLoversCommunity, #ReadingGoals, and #BookishDelights, you’re not only connecting with fellow bookworms but also ensuring your post is discoverable by anyone exploring those hashtags. It’s like joining a conversation that’s happening across the platform, and your voice gets amplified in the process.

Hashtags have this magical ability to catapult your content beyond just your followers, reaching wider audiences who share your interests. It’s your golden ticket to the bustling Bookstagram party, where every hashtag is an invitation to mingle, share, and connect with like-minded individuals.

Why are hashtags important?

Hashtags have been on Instagram practically since its release in 2010. But what has changed since then?

Instagram has been toying with, changing and evolving how they deal with hashtags over the last thirteen years. Initially it was a way to show your content to users who search for that particular hashtag. We all remember the ol’ #f4f and #follow4follow hashtags as a way to get a lot of followers quickly, right? (Just a note – don’t do this anymore)

More recently, in the last couple of years Instagram has changed how they use hashtags. Rather than it be for other users, it’s for Instagram themselves to categorise your image and content so that they can serve it to the correct audience – cool, right? Because now we have features like the Instagram Explore page and the ability to follow hashtags which means that users could see your hashtagged content before they’ve even followed you!

How Many Instagram Hashtags Should I Use?

To truly make your mark, keep things hashtag-wise in check – I’m talking 3 to 5 well-chosen hashtags per Instagram post, Story, or Reel.

Now, I get it – technically, you could toss in up to 30 hashtags, but that’s where the plot thickens. A barrage of hashtags might not paint the prettiest picture and could actually put a damper on your reach.

This all comes straight from Instagram themselves!

But hey, don’t let the hashtags hog all the spotlight. Instagram’s search tool has its eyes on your captions too. Craft them with finesse, packed with informative keywords, and you’ve got yourself a killer social SEO strategy. It’s like a tag team – hashtags and captions working their charm to leave an impression that lingers.
